Cosmetic sclerotherapy treats varicose and spider veins that are near the skin's surface. In the case of a cosmetic procedure, it involves treating blood vessels which are unsightly, but do not show serious symptoms of vein disease.
A solution is injected into the affected vein that causes it to shrink and close so that blood flow will be redirected through other, healthier veins. Once the vein is closed, it will eventually shrink and disappear from view on the skin's surface.
Before performing the procedure, the doctor will conduct a thorough examination and review of the patient's medical history to determine whether the spider or varicose veins are a minor cosmetic problem or if they indicate a more serious underlying health issue. For example, reticular veins can “feed” superficial spider veins. The course of treatment will be based on the doctor's assessment of the patient's case.
If the procedure is done for purely cosmetic reasons, please note that it will likely not be covered by health insurance. Cosmetic sclerotherapy is fast, minimally invasive and requires no sedation or anesthesia. Most patients are able to return to work or other activities quickly. It may require more than one session to completely treat your spider veins.
